Suicide Prevention for Chaplains and Volunteers: What to Say and Do

October 21, 2026 · 4 min read

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. For anyone thinking about suicide, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by call or text at 988.

Warning signs

Ask directly

It is okay to ask, "Are you thinking about killing yourself?" Asking does not plant the idea. It tells the person you are willing to hear the truth.

Stay, listen, connect

Stay with the person. Listen without arguing or lecturing. Help them call or text 988 with you present, and help remove access to anything they could use to hurt themselves if it is safe to do so. Then follow up.

Training builds confidence

GIA Advocate University's certification includes a full lesson on suicide prevention, and its Crisis Referral Directory keeps 988 and other lifelines at hand.

Become a certified community chaplain

One-day self-paced course · 11 lessons including crisis response · verifiable GIA certificate.
